چکیده

Needle electromyography (EMG) and nerve conduction studies (NCSs) performed by a physician (MD or DO) with the appropriate education, training, and experience are used to evaluate patients with neuromuscular (NM) diseases and diagnose the presence, distribution, and severity of nerve, NM junction, and muscle pathology.1 After needle EMG and NCSs studies are completed, it is necessary to prepare a written report of the test results. This report serves as a communication tool to the referring physician and documents the results and conclusions of the electrodiagnostic (EDX) evaluation. This educational document created by the American Association of Neuromuscular & Electrodiagnostic Medicine (AANEM) addresses the following two key clinical questions.

Motor amplitude of median nerve with stimulation in the palm a reliable indicator for axonal loss in carpal tunnel syndrome

Background and Aim: The present study aimed to use the median nerve compound muscle action potential (CMAP) amplitude by stimulation at the palm instead of abductor pollicis brevis (APB) needle electromyography (EMG) for determining a sign of axonal loss in patients with carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). Methods and Materials/Patients: This study was performed on 180 patients with CTS referred to ...

Needle electromyography.

Physiologic assessment of diseases of the motor unit from the anterior horn cells to the muscles relies on a combination of needle electromyography (EMG) and nerve conduction studies (NCS). Both require a unique combination of knowledge of peripheral nervous system anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, diseases, techniques, and electricity is necessary. Successful, high-quality, reproducible EM...

evaluation of patients with neuromuscular disorders. Among these studies are included nerve conduction studies (NCSs), repetitive nerve stimulation, late responses, blink reflexes, and needle electromyography (EMG), in addition to a variety of other specialized examinations. NCSs and needle EMG form the core of the EDX study. They are performed first, and usually yield the greatest diagnostic i...

Factors influencing aversion to specific electrodiagnostic studies

OBJECTIVE To compare the degree of discomfort caused by nerve conduction studies (NCS) versus needle electromyography (EMG), and to determine what factors predict aversion to one test or the other. METHODS Two hundred patients underwent both EMG and NCS, and were asked to indicate which test was more uncomfortable. Responses were then correlated with demographic information, testing character...
